How long have you been dancing? 11 years

How did you get into ballroom? Through my High School.

Which dance do you enjoy the most? The waltz.

What is your favorite dance memory? My favorite dance memory or memories I should say are the private lessons I took with Ray. He really broke me out of my shell and shared his passion for dance with me. Gave me something to love doing and was always challenging me to learn more and to become better. We always had so much fun.

What dance goal would you like to conquer next? My next dance goal is to dance outside my comfort zone. Like doing a sexy rumba.

What are your other hobbies? My other hobbies are baking and being a mom.

Tell us something you think most people don’t know about you. I have one finger that is no longer straight, it’s permanently bent.

Student of the Week – Jackie Wydra

Name: Jackie WydraW0761_wydra-343

Town: Mont Vernon

How long have you been dancing? I was an avid line dancer throughout college but began ballroom a little over a year ago.

How did you get inot ballroom? I’ve wanted to try ballroom dancing since my college years but was too nervous. Then, last year, fellow Moonie and high school friend Sam McGrath suggested I come to PaperMoon.

Which dance do you enjoy the most? It’s a tie between Eastcoast Swing and Waltz. I love the upbeat pace of swing and Waltz affords me that bit of grace and poise that I so very much lack in every day life.

What is your favorite dance memory? When my husband (Paul) and I took private lessons with Ray in preparation for our wedding. Paul was doubtful that he’d enjoy it or remember any of the steps but he did great and we both really enjoyed it.

What dance goal would you like to conquer next? I would really like to get to a solid Bronze 2 level in Swing and Waltz. I’m close, but not quite there yet. Long term, I’d like to work up the nerve and ability to participate in a formation.

What are your other hobbies? Other various hobbies include Ariel fitness classes, horseback riding, gardening, writing and spending time with my husband and our dog (aka: fur child), Florence.

Something that people may not know about me is that I have a lot of anxiety. Ballroom dancing is a way to challenge myself socially while participating in something that I enjoy.

How long have you been dancing? Since November of 2016

How did you get into ballroom? One night in November 2016 I decided to overcome my fear about dancing before I am 30 then I went to Papermoon the next day.

Which dance do you enjoy the most? Waltz. I recently watched the movie La La Land, the elegance of dancing especially Waltz blew my mind.

What is your favorite dance memory? All my dancing memory happened in Papermoon so far, it is only 6 months, but I am slowly improving and start to enjoy dancing.

What dance goal would you like to conquer next? Short term, I want to learn V-Waltz. Long term, I want to be confident with my ballroom dancing skills.

What are your other hobbies? I love good food, so I like to do “restaurant tours”(try 5 best burger in NYC in 1 Day, etc) and use those taste memories for cooking experiment. I like travelling, especially road-trips because “on the road” feels awesome. I practice Kendo (like a Jedi) and I play Baseball in the summer. Also I am a beginner Marvel fan (I have decals on my Jeep and I met Stan Lee at Comic Con), I like to watch Rally car racing and go to live music.

Tell us something you think most people don’t know about you. I have social anxiety, so I always feel hard meet with people and I thought the only possibility for me to dance with a stranger would be in virtual reality, because there’s no physical contact.

How long have you been dancing? Since April of 2016

How did you get into ballroom?  By accident really, I went to a beginner Salsa lesson and immediately after there was a Beginner Ballroom Social where I tried my feet at Foxtrot and Waltz — I was hooked.

Which dance do you enjoy the most?  Hmmm… just one? Latin dances, Foxtrot and Swing, so far.

What is your favorite dance memory?  Anytime I get to dance to live music, there’s always an energy in the air that ignites my desire to get out on the floor.

What dance goal would you like to conquer next?  I didn’t even know the name of the dance when I first watched in awe as a couple floated effortlessly around the floor. I said to myself, “I want to dance that, and I’m going do it well one day.” Well, “one day” hasn’t arrived yet, but the dance is Quickstep.

What are your other hobbies?  Kayaking (flat water and ocean), hiking, bicycling, photography and watercolors.

Tell us something you think most people don’t know about you.  That I’m a Commercial Artist / Graphic Designer and the father of two beautiful girls.

How long have you been dancing: 18 weeks

How did you get into ballroom? I’ve always wanted to be that guy! You know, the one that could really dance a Waltz or Foxtrot at a wedding and everyone would just stand back and watch!

Which dance do you enjoy the most? Waltz, it just feels so natural! The best coach out there tells me I’m built for it!

What is your favorite dance memory? In retrospect, my first dance competition. At first I wasn’t happy with my performance, however, after some contemplation it has really resonated with me.

What dance goal would you like to conquer next? Besides really nailing my timing? Tango! Gomez and Morticia did the best ever!

What are your other hobbies? – Entomology (just kidding). Riding Hard & Far! I’m an Iron Butt Member (entry level ride, over 1,000 miles in under 24 hours). My personal record is just over 2,000 miles in 42.5 hours and yes that included 8 hours’ sleep in a hotel.

Tell us something you think most people don’t know about you. Many, many years ago, I used to be a Magician, I perform anything from close up to platform stage shows. 04DSC_058902DSC_0587

Dear Friends,

It is with difficulty that I write this letter; but unfortunately both our studio rent and health insurance rates will go up significantly in 2017.  Ray and I absolutely love what we do, and we love each and every one of you; however, in order to be able to cover the additional expenses, we will be increasing our rates, effective February 1, 2017.  Our new rates will be:

Unlimited Group Class Pass: $70pp

Private lessons: $80

6-Pack of Private Lessons: $460 (a $20 savings)

12-Pack of Private Lessons: $910 (a $50 savings)

Fill-in lessons: $65 (a $15 savings)

Social Dances: $15pp

5-week Boot Camps: $125pp

Introductory Private Lesson: $45

Formations will continue to run at $50/month, so long as we have enough dancers to run them; and Pro/Am competition fees will remain the same.

In addition, any student who regularly takes at least 1 private lesson per calendar week at the regular rate will be entitled to an additional lesson(s) at the rate of $70/lesson, and these can be scheduled as far in advance as you like.

As always, we will strive to offer a high quality, immensely enjoyable experience to all who come through our doors!  We value you as students, and as friends, and we want to continue serving you to the best of our abilities.  We thank you for your understanding, and for the steadfast support you have shown PaperMoon over the years!  If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to speak with us.

Warm regards,
Maria & Ray

How long have you been dancing? 4 years

How did you get into ballroom?  My husband and I are always looking for activities that we can share.  We both enjoy dancing and so ballroom sounded like a good option.  One year Rick bought me a gift certificate to Papermoon for my birthday and we were hooked.   Not only do we love the dancing but the friendships we have developed make it so much fun!

Which dance do you enjoy the most?  Hustle! And then VWaltz and ChaCha.

What is your favorite dance memory? I have so many good memories! One strong memory was at the waltz-tango formation team performance in Boston. There was this moment when the music changed from waltz to tango and the audience started to clap to the beat – everyone was caught up in our dance performance and it was exciting to feel the energy.

My most special memory was recently when I danced with the youth team as a leader.  It was so much fun sharing that with our granddaughter, Lilianna and the other girls.MDC15_22092145-(ZF-4930-38126-1-001)

What dance goal would you like to conquer next?  I want to continue my competition and performance growth in the smooth dances and branch out at some point with hustle (maybe even the Latin dances).  I would love to do a performance routine with my husband at some point as well.

What are your other hobbies?  Travel, outdoors activities, cooking & entertaining, and interior decorating.

Tell us something you think most people don’t know about you.  I was a Girl Scout leader for nine years for my niece’s troop.  It was an incredibly rewarding journey with them from 3rd grade thru high school graduation and a privilege to participate in their growth and development.  We are all still in contact today even after most have graduated college.
